What are stem cells or earliest type of cell?
Stem cells are cells that people have in their bodies. Usually there are only a few stem cells and are released more when body wants to be cured. Stem cells can be developed to be several cells in body, such as muscle cells, bone cells, cartilage cells and heart muscle cells, etc.
Every day, human body has inflammation and deterioration. Stem cells will do the duty of repair of such deterioration. Stem cells have natural mechanism as stem cells run to the spot that needs repair, for example, when body has inflammation or wound, stem cells will run to repair such spot automatically.
If our body can produce a lot of stem cells, then we will be old slowly; we will hardly be sick and when we are sick, we will recover quickly, because body can repair itself well, but when we are older, our body can produce stem cells less, so when we are sick, opportunity to recover will be difficult.
Presently, stem cells are arranged to be biological products. In the future, stem cells will be arranged to be in the group of advance therapy medicinal products (ATMP). Stem cells and ATMP of almost all types are in injection medicine, to be brought into body through injection into blood vessel. Therefore, in every step of production of stem cells or ATMP both for personalized medicine, or for production to be medicine, there should be control strictly. The important thing, the producer must have a license for culturing stem cells from Office of Food and Drug Administration, for safety of users (presently SCL is the only one producer having such license). Production or culturing in order to increase quantity of stem cells without any license is in the scope of production of counterfeit medicine, or illegal medicine having severe penalty both producer and physicians who use such medicine.
Types of stem cells
Stem cells are divided into two types, Hematopoictic Stem Cells (HSCs)and Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs).
HSCs – blood of umbilical cord –
If it is used with the child who is the owner of umbilical cord, when using, there shall be checking of compatibility of giver and receiver. Generally opportunity to find stem cells which are compatible is 1 in 50,000-100,000.If they are siblings, opportunity to find stem cells which are compatible will be up to 1 in 4.
MSCs – tissue of umbilical cord –
placenta, placenta membrane; it can be used without checking of compatibility of giver and receiver.
